This year the tops of my tomatoes are all twisted and gnarled. They are growing in a brand new greenhouse bed of composted cow manure, with rock dust and seaweed meal added. Not all of the plants are affected, neither are the aubergines and red peppers, and the lower leaves are fine, it’s just the top one or two trusses of leaves. Is this residues of aminopyralids? The compost I buy is guaranteed free of it, but I can’t think what else could be doing it.
Are there any plans, Charles, for a book on summer vegetables? I have the winter veg and salad ones and have learned a great deal from them, despite having been growing for many years. So much of the information in books and mags is just repeating the same general stuff over and over, it’s great to get my hands on real, scientific information that I can use
Thanks for your apprecaitive comments Wendy, and I hope your tomaroes will be good. I don’t think it can be aminopyralid if they are not all affected, more likely a varietal trait.
Funily enough I have just one variety of seven in my new greenhouse with Septoria Leaf Spot (Septoria lycopersis), and its top leaves are twisting and looking purple. I think it may be a seed borne disease (variety is Tastery from Rijk Zwaan via Tuckers Seeds).
Outside I have had early blight (Alternaria solani) on Swift potatoes from infected tubers, more about that in my blog update on 16th June.
Solanums are great veg but prone to disease! A book on summer veg is a good idea, thankyou. After Myths appearing March 2014 is Homeacres in Sept 14 and then another!
