Hullo,
I’ve just come across the site and have ordered the book as recommended for getting started. I am in the process of covering part of a field into a veg garden but am a bit unsure as to what to do next. (we hadn’t read about Charles’ methods when we started so were working vaguely along a mix of friendly local advice.)
So far we have built beds by scraping back and removing the worst of the tussocky (couch grass I think) brackeny vegetation and edged the beds. My intention was to put cardboard down (I’ve got some 3-ply removal boxes) over the soils and leave till spring hoping that will kill the worst weeds, however I’m not sure whether I should buy in compost/manure/etc and put it UNDER the cardboard now- in which case what do I put on top to stop it soaking very quickly and lifting- or whether I should just put a layer of grass cuttings, put the cardboard on top and then put the manure etc on top of that- and will that grow weeds while we wait till spring? I’m not planning on planting really till spring so was expecting to leave it with time for the cardboard to decompose.

With choosing which materials to use, which order to lay them in, which compost and how much… it depends on each person’s timescale and resources. The link give many pointers.
Mulching now and starting to plant in spring, polythene is a quick option.
