Using plastic sheet as a side barrier

I have recently taken on a long and weeded allotment plot and want to try no dig. The paths either side are the same rough grass and weeds. To stop weeds growing in from the paths, can I bury a 12″ strip of thick black plastic or carpet vertically on all sides of it? Does anyone have any other ideas or experience of cheap ways to produce an effective side barrier.

I would lay a 12-18in strip of polythene on the surface, to create a weed free path and to reduce invasion of perennial weed roots.
