I was wondering, what with it being just after full moon and a root day on the Maria Thun calendar….
I decided to keep the faith and sow first- and second-early potatoes in a no-dig manner as well as putting Sarpo Miras in 6 35 litre pots.
I sowed seven 1.5m carrot rows across a bed and put in two 2.5m rows of parsnip as well.
I put some Pablo beetroot in modules and transplanted some Kelsae onions into 8cm pots to grow on indoors.
Sadly, all the garden centres were shut on Easter Sunday, so I was unable to sow a long-storage strain of onion, some banana shallots and a second set of leeks as I had run out of seed compost…..
They will have to be done tomorrow non-biodynamically!
We will see what happens at the end of the season to see if the faith has measurable benefits………or whether the sacrilege of sowing on Easter Sunday will come back to haunt me!!
Nice that you are sowing at Easter, it makes sense to me, the sun is risen! I sowed potatoes on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Good Friday has always been a big sowing day in Britain, whatever the Thuns may say!
Well it was a nice day after all – the first day with some proper spring sunshine. Today was even better, although we are not getting the 20C that Scotland, South Wales and parts of the West Country have had.
It’s interesting comparing last year’s photos with this season’s progression – by my reckoning we are about 1 month behind last year when measured by the progression of the comfrey plants and the rhubarb. Last year I was cutting comfrey leaves to put in with 1st early potatoes in the first week of April. No chance this year! The broad beans had to be resown in spring as many failed in the autumn and nearly a month after sowing they are now coming through. No sign of any asparagus yet either.
Here I think we are about two weeks behind last year, but two weeks ahead of spring 2013!! Its the most “average” winter and spring I can remember.
Sorry about your beans, I wonder why they did not survive.
Normally here the first pick of asparagus is in the third week of April, so a while yet.
It wasn’t that the beans didn’t survive, it was that they didn’t germinate! Either dodgy seeds or the soil was very wet or both, I guess. Mercifully now we have 30 which have germinated so we should get a normal sized crop, albeit a bit later than normal.
The only fantastical explanation is that whatever did for the onions last year left some nasties in the soil which the bean seeds didn’t like…..
I tend to think its just been a damp and cool March as the radishes I sowed between the garlics only starting coming through properly at the end of March and the second sowings two weeks later came through about 4 days after the first sowing. Boltardy Beetroot sown in the last week of March is already coming through too……
Whatever, I germinated peas and mange touts in modules to be safe and they did fine and are now looking good 5 days after putting into the ground.
