winter preparation

Hi all,

 

I’m a new member and I have been growing for two years now. I have an allotment and a garden. My question is this : I have never really been successful with  winter veg and want to sow now. I’m looking for suggestions. I have sown leeks, Sutherland Kale, Cavallo Nero and  I have brussels in the ground now.  My location is the south of Glasgow. Any suggestions for reliable winter wonders?

Hi Raymond. Sounds as though you have made a good start!

Do you like swede? I sowed a variety called Ruby today; we like them in stews etc. Also, PSB Red Arrow, although this will crop next spring as opposed to during winter proper. I believe some varieties may crop earlier tho.

Hello Raymond. Beetroot is reliable especially when sown in modules, now, for transplanting in July after clearing early salads, broad beans etc. See “Second Sowings” under Useful Advice in the top banner for lots more ideas too.

I’m going to try the swede for sure. Really enjoying the forum. I want to  extend the range of varieties I’m using. I’m going to look out for a vegetable show that I can visit – I’m sure that there are seeds and varieties to be picked up there
