Wood chip or bark mulch for paths?

Any opinions on which would be better for paths? The grass and weeds were smothered with cardboard and wood pellets (had them on hand) last spring, but they have completely broken down by now and with all the rain recently it has turned into a bit of a muddy mess. Also, should I scrape off what’s already there or just add the new material on top?

Just add on top, either of those.
I would pull any weeds first, or if there are loads of weeds lay more card first, otherwise just some more wood in hopefully small pieces

Thanks Charles, that’s what I was thinking. I’ll see what’s the best value if either will do. There’s only a few tiny grass seedlings at the moment, I can deal with them easily enough. It has been raining heavily all day but the sun is just trying to peek through the clouds now so maybe it will dry up!
