    No need to dig.
Thick cardboard fitted snugly around your ornamental plants will start you off, overlap edges of card pieces by 6in 15cm, the a little compost on top to weigh it doen.
Keep puling any bindweed you see near the plants.
Lay more card next April, same.

It’s late Jan but not too late, your harvest will be smaller but normally the tubers are large from planting say six weeks ago.

Such a useful tip Kath, thanks.
It’s been around for a while and one thing to be careful of is not to make the garlic concentration any higher than in the recipe give, as it can otherwise singe leaves if watered on them!
Worth trying on ants nests too, with some crushed chilli or chilli powder added to the mix

Two lovely comments, and happy to hear your new view on fertilisers Derek.
JD, Richard’s problem was that he spread raw material that looked like compost – it was still hot at spreading time. So its decomposition interferes with growth.
Yes anaerobic compost is of less benefit but at least when spread on the surface, it slowly aerates and becomes useful to soil.
    It is indeed fascinating.

I imagine doubles will grow smaller cobs, depending on spacings and soil fertility

Good to harvest now and bend the thick stalks down so the necks dry better.
My onions from seed look as big as these but less mature, harvest in a month, not sure what you are doing wrong. Sow March undercover, plant APril, harvest early August

Jacqui it’s normal for yellow courgettes to grow like that – see also my new video, exactly what I discuss towards the end

Thierry I thin most clusters to one and often remove the large central one which has a short stalk, which would make it more difficult to pick for storage. Then leave the next largest, and as soon as possible now.

in reply to: Mulching weeds out in existing asparagus bed #70502

The difficulty with mulching any existing plantings is that you can’t cover them or they die, eg the asparagus.
Therefore there is light always sneaking in at the sides of isolated pieces of say cardboard.
It still works but less thoroughly, and is worth doing, plus you must keep hand weeding.

Sounds fine Mark and all good.
Maybe no rush to remove polythene if there are many weeds still trying to grow, showing as yellow leaves if you lift it.

    Jan this is aminopyralid. Horrible.
Google Astrokerb herbicide, made by Dow who now call themselves Corteza in the UK, based in Cambs. I would complain to them, also to your MP and quote me if it helps.
Some rapeseed straw, sold as bedding, is causing problems (Rapasorb).

Check if legally there should be a boundary of no-spray next to a garden/other properties?
