Thank you Charles. I don’t think it’s worth it.
Thank you Charles. Planting this weekend after heavy rain today. I’ve kept the leeks well watered so fingers crossed but will mulch.
Blood, fish & bone Charles. We also have a bag of 6x fertiliser & chicken manure pellets, is it worth using either of those as the ground has been neglected for many years. Also is there anything at all to prevent rust on leeks please. I only planted them about 2 weeks ago.
A friend refuses to use manure because of the seeds it brings in. She has 2 large plots but also uses straw to grow in when it starts to compost down she then uses it as a mulch. She uses grass mowings, weeds in fact whatever she can lay her hands on to mulch with. Her father many years ago had an allotment in Finland & he used straw on the clay beds which eventually became superb soil.
IKEA sell net curtains called lili, I think they’re £5 a pair & a pair just covers our 18’x5′ beds in length with plenty to spare width ways. It’s a VERY fine mesh too.
You have a different recipe to mine Charles. My horticultural friend passed this on to me. 2 heads of garlic sliced across the middle & soaked in 2 pints of water for 2 weeks. Strain & bottle it. Dilute with water so you just get a slight whiff of garlic. I’ve seen several around, one where you boil the garlic. You’ll need mega amounts of garlic for all your needs. Will you be reporting your findings to your followers?
Now we have a full plot I want to experiment with carrots.I spoke to someone from Riverford Organics & he said they use garlic spray so bed will be covered with fleece or enviromesh & the other sprayed several times with garlic wash. Instead of rows I intend to scatter over the beds. What are your views on this please Charles?
Thank you Charles.
Thank you Charles. We can get on with the planting. The ground elder has come through the cardboard & the 5″ of manure. Our concern is we have an elderly neighbour & need to prevent it getting to her plot, it is very close to the boundary. There’s a blackcurrant & red currant on our side of the boundary. Is it too late to move then to the fruit bed without loosing the crop?
Thank you Charles & Steph.
Sorry another question. We lifted some paving paths & there were lots of bindweed roots on the surface, would we be best forking those out? It looks like fat spaghetti, can it go in the composter?Thank you Charles. It’s getting easier with each message. At this rate the pallet fencing will be done sooner than we thought. Sorry Charles, just to be sure, on top of manure???
We look forward to your new books.Thank you Charles. Just passed on the info to John. He is now not going to dig it, we’ll take out any visible perennial weeds, then manure, then rock dust OR rock dust then manure???? Sorry to mither about it. We also have an area at the front that is 18’x10′ that is thick with couch & horsetail. Would you dig that to remove as much as possible then put cardboard down with a thick manure mulch & rock dust on the manure. We are taking down a self seeded oak & sweet chestnut tree today. Out comes the trusty azada.
I have access to a reasonable amount of coffee grounds. Would it be better to add them to the com poster mix them in or put them on top of the manure that will be spread soon?
A fellow allotmenteer on our site suggested we used roundup for something on our plot. When I declined he told me that I have it anyway as farmers use it on rape & all sorts pre harvesting. I told a friend who posts on several gardening forums & she too was horrified when it was confirmed by farmers that this was the case with several crops. I did email the company whose rape seed oil I buy but didn’t get a reply. I now use a lot more organic coconut oil. I look out for organic rape but never come across it.` I read a really good book that changed my way way thinking a while ago. it’s called ‘We Want Real Food’ by Graham Harvey. A really good read & it explains how & why things changed in farming.
Thank you Charles.I can’t wait to get it sorted.
