A favourite of ours is Reine des Glaces (Queen of the Ice?!) which is delicious and strong-growing.

Ribston Pippin is exceptionally well-flavoured (in Cumbria) and stores well, and we also enjoy Brownlees Russett for the same reasons.

Hi – I grow high bush blueberries in an exposed, northern garden and I don’t prune them at all. Each year the are heavily cropping and it’s not reliant on new growth from the base. So personally I’d only prune if they were outgrowing their space. If you must, look for twiggy growth that has emerged on fruited shoots from last year, and prune that to a healthy up-turned bud.

Hi – though Charles uses mainly sawdust for paths I do use some carpet strips secured with homemade fence wire staples – works well but you need to weed edges and watch for lurking slugs !

Hi – I’ve had a lot of couch to deal with over the years and have found that – like many problem weeds like sorrel too – successive years of mulching does as much as hand weeding – it simply seems to make the ground less hospitable and they vanish in about 2-3 seasons. On non veg borders I typically alternate bark, municipal compost and mushroom compost in a pretty hefty layer applied in April.
    Best of luck !
