Happy New Year to you too. Have you used ‘More Veg’ seed?
I plan to start to save seed with my ‘learners’ this year. What do you make of the EU planning to licence seed production….? Will this have an impact on small seed banks?
I’m glad we no longer live on the levels with ALL this rain!

I grew the same as last year but ofcourse that year was a disaster for tomatoes – so I was disappointed with the flavour this year…. Sungold, gardener’s delight, tigerella and lidi….? I wonder where Charles and you got your seeds from this time?

SOOO annoying. At the moment it is only happening in the greenhouse the polytunnel toms are slightly further behind. The Fiornetino and San Marzano are worst hit. The Tigerella seem to be fine as are the Lidi which have so many flowers I have raised the lower branches on crates to keep them off the ground. I am watering each night in the greenhouse and every 2 or 3 days in polytunnel.

Ok – thanks Charles. Do they actually do any harm? Will deal with it next week as I’m off to Festival. K

Hmmmm – This is only my 2nd year of growing so I am feeling my way too. I use Maria and Matthias Thun’s biodynamic sowing and planting calendar. In it it shows sections for sowing Roots, Flowers, Fruits and Leaves. I sow my leaf seeds accordingly but I was also of the understanding that the asc moon draws plants up…. Perhaps Charles can help us here?!

I’ve only just seen this post (sometimes the replies seem to get out of order) Sorry not to respond sooner. I now have some wire which I will try… If it’s not good please may I get back to you? Thanks for offer!

Ok thanks for that Charles – with the 4mm wire do you need a ‘template’ to bend the wire over to make it the right shape or does it just stick into the ground?? LBS do 50 x 3ft6in wide hoops for £47.55…. they are only 18 inches high though.. 60 inches over the top.. Might be too tight.

Ok – LBS is £23.25 for 100m x 1.5m of 30gsm excluding VAT and postage but I think it beats others in price. Will let you know how it performs… K

    Ok Thanks for that.
Pigeons are a problem so might try some of each weight and see which is best.
    Will let you know. K

Ok! Will sow tomorrow. Is there a time early in the year which avoids flea beetle?
Personally I think rocket is over rated but my customers are asking for it! Thanks Charles. K

    Hi Tracy,
the leaves are growing again – I stopped picking for two weeks to let the baby plants get properly established again. My customers have been great and are even more enthusiastic to have my salads again having been forced back to supermarket varieties!! What a dramatic change in weather and temperature from last Wednesday… Quite a shock to us and plants! Thanks for concern! K

I pick my leaves first thing in the morning when they are full of night moisture and before the sun (!) has been on them. I wash and mix the leaves in large bins and then spin/twirl the crates to remove most of the water. I seal the bags with bag neck tape from a dispenser thing. I then either deliver straight away or put straight in the fridge to deliver next morning. My customers say the salad last for a week. Condensation does form on bags which doesn’t look so good on market stalls but people don’t seem to mind that. K
