They look fine just like winter lettuces outside all look like this and it is that they don’t really grow in December and January because of lack of light. I don’t think we have a magnesium deficiency. We have a small commercial organic market garden and grow in the polytunnel in the winter it seems they like that environment better although they don’t grow after mid November as I have said they are growing now
We had the same problem with thistles when we started out. Most of them are biennial so that helps. Also card and 6 ” of compost works well, where are you based? We are in South Wales and got bulk compost from green waste and it worked well even if it was a bit woody. It helps get started and mound up high the compost. When the perennial weeds poke through trowel them out and eventually they give up honestly. It does work good luck
25th November 2018 at 6:47 pm in reply to: Using municipal compost used as ground preparation for new (and first) bed? #50337We used green compost when we started and it worked fine, we had it delivered in 20 tonne loads!!! you may find though interesting items and plastic that is a nuisance but it is worth it we had and continue to have amazing results from it now we make our own and have a good supply of horse manure so good luck
Thanks for that I will do that, do you get them from Defland and do they work?
Thanks Charles glad I am not alone I can eat the bit not affected and now they all seem OK I guess the high temperatures in the tunnel are even getting to the peppers
Ive bumped this up as I had no response and I found 3 more like the picture today and still wonder what it is that is causing this could it me the heat in the poly tunnel
20th July 2018 at 7:46 pm in reply to: Too late to plant Sweetcorn, winter squash, cucumber and courgette? #47686It is a bit late but if growing in modules I would plant as quick as you can and hope for a warm autumn they will romp away in the heat although it may be a bit late for sweetcorn just put them in and cross your fingers good luck
thank you Charles I wondered if that was the case but as I write we are having some very light rain and it is forecast overnight so that will save a job.
Yes I would agree it is almost certainly rats. We had them in the polytunnel all winter, a nightmare, I kept digging up the hole and tunnels and tryied to flood it out and put heavy pots on top they eventually moved out. The holes they make are very neat!! Good luck
We have some problems with standing water if it is very wet like now. We have a trench all around the 6-8 “edge of the no dig bed with the idea of stopping weeds jumping across. In the wet it acts as a moat. The compost on the no dig beds is always accessible and clean and productive what ever the weather. It does mean a bit of work to start with and maintaining but looks good as well so I would recommend this a way to cope with water (and snow when melting as we are having now.)
Last year our mint patch sounded like the whole bee hive was on it but it is invasive and grows well especially in a no dig bed
Hi Phil from Cardiff we are very close to you near Llantwit major if you would like to see what we have done with no dig contact me on alileach@btinternet.com
I am really not sure. I think will try and do a test but it does seem to answer the problems we have getting cauliflowers to grow and swede to develop, I don’t really know what others do but I will ask at the next meeting of the local horticultural club at the end of the month and let everyone know.
Thanks Charles some of the colours are really beautiful and really deep dark blue, we will try them and see what they are like maybe we have discovered a new variety !!!!
all the bestHi Hempie
we have the same issue but is not a problem, I think shows that the breaking down of the compost is progressing well, incidentally in the tunnel we had some magic cow compost from a digester given to us this year and I put it in the tunnel and we have the most beautiful large white mushrooms appearing quite awe inspiring. -
