I have made raised beds that are 10 inches deep and they are taking a mammoth effort to fill! I see Charles recommends 6inches, but went deeper because we are on shale with very little clay top soil, 2 inches to 5 at most. Should I stick to the 10 inches or make them shallower? Thanks.
Yes every extra inch is a lot of ingredients! I made a 6 inch bed on muddy gravel and it grew well, with compost as its ingredient. I think a 6 inch bed is ok for your shale, preferably compost not soil.
