Hi Charles, im looking at building my own compost bins for the allotment however I am not sure what to do for the lid. Should it be:
    A) No lid – and allow the bin to be open to the elements
    B) Wooden lid – Keep it dark and lock the moisture in
    C) Clear polycarbonate sheet – Allow sunlight and heat into the bin
    Many thanks.

Wooden lid is best, allows some air and keeps rain off, not too much protection for rats being busy in darkness underneath.
Heat wise you should have enough from the recent ingredients, sunlight makes little difference to core heat.
