hello charles. good luck in your new venture.

i have germinating basil and coriander and i will soon be potting them on but what would be the best compost to plant them into. my plan is to grow them on in the kitchen window. any tips for success (should i add perlite to aid drainage)

Thanks for your comments, yes to some extra drainage for winter, or just be careful to water less than in summer.

As for basil over winter, you are a brave man, good luck (it is not famoulsy healthy in the low light of winter, supermarket basil is brought on with artificial light).
