My broccoli has flowered probably due to the excessive heat these past few weeks. Does that mean it is spent and of no use? My allotment neighbour has suggested that I cut off the flowers and watch for side shoots. Is this worth doing?

It sounds like a summer flowering variety, normal behaviour. Now the plants are dry, and waiting for moisture to re-grow and make more nice shoots, which will probably be smaller than the first ones. It is worth cutting off all the flowering stems, water the plants if possible.

Thank you for your speedy reply. I would have pull them all out in my ignorance!
