Wondering if anyone here has used a 100% jute rug instead of cardboard when starting a no-dig garden. There don’t seem to be any synthetic bits, just jute and a cotton thread used to weave it together. The rug isn’t suitable for indoor use anymore but I thought it could make a good weed barrier. Or not?

Yes for sure Seaves, a great idea as it suppresses weeds while degrading.
After a year or two it will disintegrate, be eaten by worms but you may be able to use it two or three times before that. I did similar with an old wool carpet in 2013.

Is there an easy way I can I tell if my old carpet is made from wool? It appears to have a hessian base, not the foam rubber I’ve seen on other carpets. It came with the house so IO don’t know how old it is, but my guess is over 20 years…

It would resist combustion whereas synthetics ‘grow’ a fire.
