    my red russian kale has been growing fine but now its not doing too well. it has side shoots growing off the centre stalk should these be snapped off. my frosty kale is growing great.

     Mine is the same, sideshooting and also with some mildew, less tall than other kales. This is all fine unless you want to feast on it now. I grow it for the new and healthy growth in spring when it is most prolific (March to early May) and when its leaves are tasty in salads.
