A friend has just given me a couple of asparagus crowns and the only place I could put them was at the end of a new bed that has had around 10cm of compost and a black polythene cover since mid february. Most of the weeds have been dealt with but a few do remain, so I removed what I could with a trowel, planted the crowns and recovered with black polythene. I have left a 10cm hole above the centre of each crown, will this be enough? Having never grown it before I’m not sure where the growth happens!

Yes that should work but watch the holes as well in case spears push up around their edge, maybe enlarge a little if so
