I have had black plastic down to kill an area of my lawn for about a year. I am getting ready to pull it off and the lawn grass looks completely dead. Do I need to make a tall lasagna bed or can I just put a bit of compost on the dead grass?

If so, then I probably couldn’t plant this fall. Not sure what to do once I remove the black plastic. I really don’t liketall, layered lasagna beds anymore. I am hoping for more flat beds where I just add a bit of composted manure to top.

Good question because lasagna beds are just one of many options. Spreading 2-4 inches compost on top is good for growing veg, flowers, anything.
If you can buy some plants, there is still time to plant leeks, broccoli, beetroot, Florence fennel, unless you are in v northern USA.
