    Hi all,

I am hoping to create some beds of daffodils and tulips over at the allotment. The ground has been recently covered with black plastic to suppress the weeds (which will not have died off yet).

    Does this plan seem sensible:-
    – timing – October for daffodil bulbs, November for tulips
    – cover the existing weeds with cardboard and dampen with water
    – (optional) put a thin layer of compost down for the bulbs to go on
    – cover bulbs with 4 inches or compost

I’d welcome any advice and also comments on whether the bulbs need a thin layer of compost to go on, rather than damp cardboard?

Also – after the bulbs have flowered and died off in 2019, is it ok to cover the beds with plastic to suppress the weeds?

    Thanks.

Nice plan, I never tried this and wonder if the bulbs will be deep enough, only because of how compost settles to a much thinner layer with time.
I would try some as you suggest, with a little compost under the bulbs, and some where you make a cut in the card to make a hole in the soil 2in deep for the bulbs.
