Charles – I was interested to see that in your February ‘this month’ you say not to plant onion sets now but wait until late March to stop them running to seed. I have some shallot sets which I was thinking of planting in the next week but I presume they react the same as onions …. or do they? Should I leave these until March? Ros
Thanks I forgot to mention shallots! In fact there is no rush unless you are on free draining soil, in which case I would plant them now as they do not bolt in the way that onion sets do. But after years of planting shallot bulbs in March, with good results, I now pop them in at the same time.
Also you can sow shallot seeds now.
