I spread compost this year and the soil was too high. So having wood from an old pallet in the garage, I spent 10 minutes knocking together a 4m by 1m raised bed frame, from pallet wood and screws, only 4″ high, but enough to retain the compost. Thought I’d mention, as pallets are often available free. I got mine when a desk was delivered to my work place. If anyone knows where to get more pallets, please let me know.

It´s great when stuff comes free, isn´t it! I have to raise beds due to a major molerat and boar problem. I wanted to use Straw bales but they cannot be had for love nor money round here. I am thinking of using uralita, asbestos free, of course. In the UK we used to go around the back of the diy stores near the loading bays and often found broken pallets there. Places like aldi, Lidl and other supermarkets may help too.

You often see pallet cast-offs by the skips of big garden centres – I’ve not taken them myself, but I’ve noticed them (I’ve usually been pilfering the large amounts of cardboard they dispose of).

Thanks Mandy and Rhys. Mole rats and boar, wow! Puts my cat problem into perspective.

I’ll check out the local Wickes and Aldi. I have seen some by the local garden centre, but since they sell fire wood, I’ve assumed they won’t give them away, worth an ask I think.

As an aside, a shop sent me the wrong sized fruit and veg cage for my currant bushes. They said they’d send the right one next week, and I could keep the wrong one for free. So I have a free 4m by 1m by 0.65m high veg cage for the new raised bed!

Any transport company or courier will gladly offload broken pallets that are non spec, also companies who specialise in heavy removals they have fantastic sized pallets and packaging from abnormal loads etc.
