I am making up new beds using scaffold boards with cardboard on the bottom then compost 6 inches do I still need to cover with plastic on top?
No. You can plant it straight away if your compost is not ‘fresh’ and still hot. Just keep pulling/trowelling any persistent weeds that appear.
JanI feel 6″ of compost would be needlessly extravagant. Certainly plant as soon as you like. Why not retain the extra compost, and if necessary, ‘spot cover’ with more cardboard/compost any areas of emerging weed.Be sure to overlap and bury edges.
