    Hi Charles.

Apologies if this has been dealt with elsewhere, I’m struggling to find it.

My asparagus plants are dieing back but many ferns are still green and, I therefore presume, photosynthesising and feeding the parent root/ crown. Sure, Daylight becoming less and less, but still energy from the sun helping to build next years harvest.

Is it best to leave them til all growth has turned brown and then remove to the compost bin, or is it not that important really, and they could be cut off at their stem base now? Whilst not in a rush, I’m tidying the plot, and it will make compost spreading on that bed a little easier.

    Thanks in advance, Tris

Hi Tris, fine to cut them now.
The amount of photosynthesis in these short days is very small, your asparagus roots are now well charged for spring, best cut and mulch.

Thanks for that Charles, can get it done this morning.

As an aside, nice harvest of butter beans here (czar), hope you’ve got some “in the bag” too.
