The site that I took over a year ago has a lot of ~10 year old blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes that are virusy and didn’t really produce this year.  I’d like to replace them. Am planning on burning the stems. Do I need to dig out the stumps (shudder)? And should I wait a year before planting new ones to avoid them catching whatever disease? They will be planted 5 and 20 metres away from the old ones.  Will be buying 20 bushes so I don’t want to mess it up!

You are right to wonder and ask because as you say, its a big investment for a long time, one hopes. Sorry I am no expert on soft fruit viruses. 5 to 20 metres away sounds feasible –  does anyone else have experience of this please?

you could reduce the cost/risk by striking some of the plants from cuttings. Most soft fruit works really well and should fruit in the following year.
