I’ve inherited some pretty old looking black and red currant bushes. They have thick woody stems up to about 5 foot high. Last winter the previous summer’s growth was cut back and this year they have hardly fruited. As the fruit cage is only about 7 foot high i’m wondering if I should cut them back to near ground level, or whether they have had their day?

Steve they may fruit next year… after a gentle prune.
You could take softwood cuttings, still just time (no delay), pop recent growth into compost so you have spare plants next autumn in case these are not fruiting next summer.
