I started off my broad beans for the first time in autumn, and they are now about 3/4 inches. Snow is expected later this week so I thought I should protect them with a good straw mulch. Is this a good idea? Should I completely cover the plants? Should I take it off straight after the snow or leave it on to protect against the generally frosty conditions we get in February?

I never cover mine and they usually survive unless they get very waterlogged. Assuming they are an autumn sowing variety they are pretty hardy.

I agree with Bluebell, they should resist hard frost and 3/4" high is fine, not too stemmy as longer stems are more vulnerable to hard frosts, which are coming this week.
