Wood ash – adding to the veg patch

I’ve a good few buckets of wood ash from the winter’s fires. Is it a good idea to spread this ash on top of the compost layer I’ve put down or should it be spread on top of the soil before the compost layer is added?

And, of course, how much should I be using?
