I do have manure but I already have plans for it up here and only have half a dozen head of cattle at the moment. It’s very sandy soil up here so needs as much muck as I can produce and this year is the first year I have housed the cattle so haven’t got a stockpile yet. It’s all still very much a work in progress and there are still not enough hours in the day but it is beginning to take shape. I have placed an order for some new tools which is exciting. I’m going to try an experiment, tending part of the garden with my existing stainless steel tools and the other half with the new copper ones. Be good to see what happens.

That is a good point, thank you. I am going to persevere with this but it may have to be put on hold for this year as I have got rather a lot on myself and was hoping to have some support for this project in the village but it looks like it’s going to have to be done by me. Ho hum, add it to the list of things to do next year.

Hi Charles, thanks for the advice. I did try replying earlier but think I must have done something wrong. I have another couple of questions, any idea how far a load of manure, approx ten tonnes, will cover at 6″? That’s the size of the local farmers trailer. Also, do you have any experience of the Libra shovel that the Implementations people sell? They say that some people find it easier to use than the ordinary spade and wondered if you’d tried it. They are quite expensive and I’d hate to get the wrong one! Thanks.
