Did you give them a good soaking first? Quite often they will slide out when wet.

Haha, Newbie alert! No totally didn’t think to do that! They still look good though three days later, first true leaves growing nicely.

    Hi Charles

These plug trays seem to be permanently unavailable. I notice that Gardman also produce propagating kits but with “cell inserts” instead of “plug trays” – are they the same thing?

That is frustrating. However I noticed that B&Q are still selling them on http://www.diy.com, pack of 3 for £3.70 I think.

I use what I think is a scientific spatula to get out seedlings. Especially if you don’t use modules or leave them in modules so long that they have roots out the bottom. The small flag surface is really handy
I have never been able to find trays with a hole big enough to push a pencil in. So end up having to crunch the modules to some extent.
Soaking is always good but seedlings are surprisingly hardy on the whole.

I got some from Homebase – they’re not bad – not as flimsy as those green ones I’ve used before which seem to be the ones that most places sell.  The ones I bought have 40 cells, not sure if they do other sizes as I bought them last year.

Containerwise trays will last several life times and come in a good range of cell sizes and depths but they are not cheap typically averaging about £4 each once carriage is included but I would not now buy anything else.

Yes Tony I feel the same though have only used them for a few weeks, I like their solidity, and smooth-sided holes mean that plants slide out with little damage to the rootball.

I hope your RHS work is going well, saw you wrote a nice composting masterclass for The Garden.
