Hi all, I had my best plants last year in the styrofoam cell trays (bought some winter pansies in them the previous autumn). Styropack make them but only sell commercial quantities (minimum order 60 trays I think but I will be checking on Monday). If anyone else is interested in buying some of these maybe we could put in an order and share the costs. I am near the A303 in North Dorset. If there is interest I will pass on my email addy. Hi Kev, so here are some pictures. They look good and solid. Each cell is 55x40x55mm deep.
There’s a drainage hole in the bottom, 10mm diameter. Big enough for a pencil, bit small for a finger.

They are cheaper per unit if you are collecting. They have a depot in West Sussex, near Arundel.
I’m down that way from time to time, so would be happy to collect.Hi Paul, yes I am interested. The ones I bought with plants in are 4×3 cells but this larger size of 24 cells would suit me better. What is their minimum for collection? I would take at least 24 trays and could take more if you had to buy a larger quantity. I could also put an email around the allotment society if we needed to take a lot. What price have they quoted? Thanks, Kev.

In my opinion, it’s better not to use multi cell trays at all. Instead, use soil blocks. With soil blocks, there is no wastage when the cell trays eventually have to be thrown away, no collection, cleaning and storage of trays for re-use the next year, and easier transplanting, because there is no time spent struggling to get the plantlets out of the cells. Transplants in soil blocks get away to a good start because the roots don’t circle around inside a restrictive cell but stop growing at the edge of the soil block, ready to start growing again when transplanted (the fancy name for this is air-pruning).All you need to get started with soil blocks is a soil-blocking device and a flat surface, such as a gravel tray, on which to place the blocks. There is a UK based manufacture of soil-blocking devices and they sell their products worldwide. They have a nice web-site here:
For small numbers of larger size soil blocks I’ve even used jelly, desert and cake molds from my kitchen. Anything will do to shape the soil/compost mixture into a firm block.
I’ve given away all my multi-cell trays and I now have a lot more space in my allotment shed.

Styropack were very helpful and Kevin and I collected some bags of these rigid polystyrene 24 cell trays today (see pictures in earlier post above).
They come in a minimum order of 60 trays – if you collect in person.
Cost is 24p per tray plus VAT ie £14.40 + VAT for 60 trays.
They will post if you prefer, but I think the minimum order is 480 trays by post, and I believe the unit cost is higher to include postage.
We dealt with Styropack in Ford, near Arundel West Sussex 001903 722811.
They also have depots in Blackburn and Aberdeen, who presumably can offer the same.
