I had great success with some lettuce last year I believe were ‘marvel of four seasons’ I got given them as seedlings and they were never touched by the slugs and harvested a lot of leaves over a very long period. Nice crunch as well. When they finally ran to flower I collected the seed as at the time I had no idea wat variety the were. I’ve now got some small ones in the tunnel under fleece which seem to be surviving ok.

Thanks for the advice Charles. It really is remarkably colder this winter. Hopefully it’s a sign of a nice summer ahead. That makes great sense earthing the potatoes up with manure.

That’s an interesting theory about the seed coat abrasion. Some weed seeds will also be brought out of dormancy by the effect of light when dug and distributed near the surface. Regular rotavation to the same depth will also create a hard pan just below the depth of rotatavtion.
