    I wonder if laying a soaked layer newspaper of newspaper down first and then adding the thinner layer of compost would help create solid cover?

    I agree and wonder if in extremely poor soil if digging once might help as long as only the top dressing was used each year after? The time factor is important, how many garden beds can we possibly create and care for with digging? Much less I think than this method.

    Hello!

    When Charles plants squash through a plastic mulch over a weedy area does he try to water the plants through the planting hole during the growing season?

    I too have an area where I want to expand and it is full of hogweed or cow parsnip hard to tell the difference. As well some water hemlock does grow around here. The good news I learned is that goats are not hurt by eating these plants I was very surprised!

    I have been considering using pigs and goats first on the area and then move to mulching and composting.
