Thank you Andy. We are in central Scotland. We have already made the raised beds using horse manure and added sand for lightness. I hope now to plant the garlics and shallots as soon as the weather is dry enough!
Early Purple Wight and Provence Wight have been delivered along with Shallot Bitztro and Red Gourmet, and Red Cross Onion sets. I have never planted onion sets before. I hope some of these will survive. As we do not have any greenhouse and tunnels yet, I wanted to increase of the fruition success and do without seeds for now. Thanks again.
I just wondered whether I could plant garlic and shallots now. The area is high up the hill and a windy one too…….. Would you recommend mulching around the garlic/shallot plants or fleecing over them if planted now? Many thanks.
Thank you that the advise. Will also find the Myths book!
Thank you for that Charles. I am taking delivery of 5 tonnes horse manure this afternoon. Can you advise whether I could just put 2-4 inches of these on top of undug grassy soil and then immediately plant directly into them with potatoes, garlic and onions?
The horse manure is more than a year old. I expect I can plant bare root fruit trees with the manure on top too – or should these be incorporated into the soil?
Many thanks.
Hi Charles
Could you please let me know why you would use green waste in the paths? Could you also let a newby like me know what is the defination of green waste? I know someone said coffee grounds is classified as ‘green’. Thank you in advance.Hi there, I am new to the forum. I seem to be living in similar climate as yours – hill, mad windy place and cold. We have just moved to the new home and planning to put in an orchard and veg. I am interested to find out what ‘edible shelter belts’ you mentioned? I need to do the same on at least two sides as we live at the brow of the hill. Many thanks.
Many thanks. I will look through these tonight. As the sun is shining and not raining so much at the moment, we made the most of it outdoors today. Thank you again.
Thank you for your reply. The ground had previously been farmland. What do you use after the grass has died down? And you mentioned about the use of wooden edger which may encourage more slugs in. I know with the soggy land at the moment, that I would certainly need to raise the beds up.
