Thanks again. I have the book so will have another careful read. Just want to make the best use of what, for me, is a precious commodity.

I have Moorland Gold Peat (not multi purpose). Should I go 50/50 with the proprietary (cheap!) multi purpose compost or would you recommend an addition of vermiculite and/or perlite? Would the same proportion(s) work for both seed and potting on purposes?
Best wishes, Martin.
Thanks rtj1211 and peat for your helpful comments. Think I will stick to cell trays this year with a view to experimenting with soil blocks next season. Cheers.
Thanks Charles and Peat for information and links.
Seem to recall Monty Don advocating them last year using his own home-made compost (I think) but unsure about the practicalities involved or if they work well with bought multipurpose compost – so thanks for tips. Always wary of gimmicks to sell things!!!

Seed compost purchase seems such a lottery from year to year as quality changes – this makes things even more difficult if you are trying to work with a limited budget and then are let down by the results. I am prepared to pay a premium for organic composts but surely there should then be a guaranteed minimum standard!
