Thanks Charles
For all the time and effort you put into your website, in particular the monthly updates. I already have a selection of your books constantly to hand, and am looking forward to reading (and adding notes to) the new diary just received.
Merry Christmas to all
Anne
Thanks Bluebell, I was wondering how I will add manure to the bags in due course, so will probably end up taking the whole panel out anyway. Good luck with yours in the polytunnel.
Hi
I had a good crop last year of outdoor strawbs, unknown age and variety as I inherited the garden about 3 years ago, but I figured being at least 3 years old it was time to get some new plants and start again. I found picking at ground level was hard work, so this year I am having a go at growing them in grow bags on a bench. Does anyone have any experience of this? Should i plant through slits or remove whole panel of plastic. As an insurance policy I have kept some of the old plants growing.
Also how good are runners at producing quality strawberries if you pot them up, and how many runners should you take from each plant.
I love this website and I have 3 of Charles books so far, they are brilliant, can’t think why anyone would want to dig.Thank you for a very prompt reply, I will carry on then.
Another question, I grew a courgette plant last summer next to a pile of this manure, it had huge healthy leaves, but not as many courgettes as I’ve had in the past, do you think this was because of the high nitrogen content, if so is it better to only use it on leafy veg,
That’s a nice easy solution. I’m assuming it was ok to chop up all the tomato stalks and put them on the heap. Thanks again.
I was very fortunate to inherit a 12’x 10’greenhouse and an 18’x 10’polytunnel when we moved, I am relatively new to veg growing but have been using the greenhouse for sowing and bringing things on before planting in the polytunnel, it seems to work. I have some tomato plants growing in the greenhouse also aubergines and peppers, all in pots, they seem to cope with the heat, the greenhouse is in a sunnier position and can get very hot inside. I also use the greenhouse to overwinter some tender succulents, as it is easier to keep frost proof. I have been planting directly into the polytunnel borders, and since reading Charles’ excellent book, I have been piling on the manure. I hope you find this helpful.
