Thank you Charles for your advice. I feel still quite confused because little cucumbers seem to grow more on side shoots rather than on the main stem (unlike Market More) but I might get familiar with this!

Charles, our next project will be a composting toilet and I’ve been doing a bit of research online. Is yours built to your own design or did you find it elsewhere?

yet another question: we have recently discovered that the manure we are composting has mainly PINE woodchip in it – we are worried that too much pine (as against hardwood) may be too acid. Could this be a problem?
Secondly, does pine woodchip take longer to compost than hardwood?

Thanks Charles. I asked about aminopyralid and he says he’s having it tested and will send us the test results in about a week, so we will wait for that, and we also plan to have a look at it before we buy.

Hello, I am looking for a bit of advice on pricing. I’ve found some well rotted (5 year old) horse manure for sale on our local rural hub noticeboard, and I’ve asked the price for 15 tonnes, and been told to make an offer! I can’t find any idea of price online (or I can, but they vary so wildly, that it doesn’t help at all!)
Can anyone provide me with guidance please? (also bearing in mind that it will be delivered)

Thanks Dieter, I haven’t managed to see any grub in the ground so far. I’ll carry on checking.

    Hi,
Further to my previous post, my lettuces are also affected. it looks like the roots are being nibbled. See photos below.
I would be really grateful if anyone could advise on this as I am worried all my plants are going to disappear quickly at that pace…
    Cheers,

Hello, we are planning on building a horse manure hot bed for propagation in one end of the polytunnel… is there an optimum height width or length for the hot bed? we were thinking of about 70cm high, 1m wide, 2m long (ish)… concerned that maybe we might need more depth to generate enough heat?

    Hi everybody,
We are about to order a couple of polytunnels and I would like further information.
Charles, did you get a feedback from OGA regarding UV blocking polythene? does this affect the growth/taste of plants?
Jayjay, you said you have rails and burried the polythene 6 inches to act as a pests barrier, has this depth proved efficient? Any comment in this matter welcome as it sounds that building a tunnel with rails is easier than digging a trench and bury the cover.
    Thanks,
    Luciole

Thanks Charles & John for your replies. We are just starting out, and so were hoping to spread this manure straight away – but from your comments it looks like we will have to compost it for another year before using, and try and find another source for ‘ready composted’ manure.

I have a further question regarding wood chip in compost: we are collecting some “well rotted” horse manure from a nearby field, but some of that manure, though in itself appearing well rotted, has less well rotted wood chip mixed in (see photos). Is this still ok to use or should it be rotted more?
