We use the local council compost that is organically verified and we get 20 tons delivered in a big tractor and do the no dig and our results are amazing, i won 5 first prizes in our local show this year!!! . So far we have had 4 loads over 2 years and I would suggest you try it if you can find somewhere to source it near where you live.
Our carrots also split and I think that it was the erratic rainfall, so far I am struggling to harvest the parsnips they have gone sooo deep and snap easily but if I manage they look ok so far, we have lots of strange shapes though, they still taste good.
We have used tons of the council free compost and whilst it has lots of woody bits the worms soon got to work and I just raked the sticks off, we also got loads of mushrooms sprout all over the veg beds last year after we had put down the compost so I am guessing they were a good sign, am I correct.

We started last year and as we had to wait for our poly tunnel I invested in the grow lights. We had them about 40-60 cm above the seedlings. Then got a cheap timer to control how long they were on for, I tended to time it for 10-12 hours, as I think that that mirrors what we get in March (( up to the equinox) when we are sowing seeds for light. It did work for most seeds we tried, not parsley though!! and the seedlings were not so leggy. Hope it works for you.
