I have also been looking for something more robust than those generally available. I have just received some propagation trays (8×5 modules per tray) from containerwise.co.uk. These are fully rigid and should last many years. The website appears to be for the wholesale market wanting large quantities but they will sell to individuals: I got 10 trays for £54.59 (incl VAT and p&p). Charles uses these in his latest video.

I like Ellison’s Orange which has an aniseed flavour on top of a rich taste similar to a Cox. It’s also juicy and definitely moreish. I’ve only had a cordon a few years but it has proven reliable with good yields.

I am growing Wautoma this year as well. I have not removed the male flowers and usually water daily. So far, twelve cucumbers from two plants. Is it possible that the temperature is too high? I have two plants of another variety (F1, all-female) that are at different ends of the greenhouse: the one in the corner that gets most sun has given a poor yield with withered fruits as the OP describes whereas the one twelve feet away in a slightly cooler part has been prolific. By the way, if you want an open-pollinated variety I find Tamra to be superior to Wautoma in terms of flavour and texture – it also doesn’t need peeling!

I have six gooseberry cordons (different varieties) grown in a narrow bed next to a fence. If you want only one avriety and have the space for a bush I would go for that as the yield will be much better. For cordons, this is useful: https://www.pomonafruits.co.uk/blog/gooseberries-a-forgotten-fruit/

Probably will come down to personal preference but this perhaps will give you a starting point: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/fruitandvegetables/10539218/Which-are-the-best-rhubarb-varieties-to-grow.html

I would also concur with recommending Joan J as they taste superb. Mine are in a 1.2m x 4.8m raised edged bed and after a year or two the initial row has ‘disappeared’ and now the whole area has canes (which I do thin out). The other advantage I have noticed is that they seem to be contained within the bed and I don’t seem to get runners popping up in adjacent beds – something I see with the other two varieties I grow. The early variety I grow is Malling Minerva – these have taken a couple of years to get a reasonable yield but I find them not much earlier than Glen Ample which produces a higher yield of larger and better tasting fruits.
