Hi Jen, sounds like you’re raring to go! If you do need lots of cardboard, just wanted to mention that I have found great sources of large scale cardboard packaging – a specialist bicycle shop, Halfords and Homebase, all in a local retail park. They are only too happy to get rid of it. Only thing is you need to remove any metal staples before using. But it’s done a great job on my allotment – no sign of any weeds coming through layer of cardboard then layer of composted stable manure. Good luck and enjoy your allotment – agree with Charles, this is such a gorgeous time of year :))
Hi Jan, just to say I totally get how exciting it is to finally get an allotment after years on the waiting list! I had to wait 8 years too; and 10 years later still just love my allotment 🙂 Great to start with no-dig too… will save you so much time and effort. Good luck and enjoy it!
Hi Allotmenteer, I don’t think your seedlings look too bad. If I were you I’d plant them out quite deep and cover with fleece and see how they get on… Better at least to give them a chance – may be that they just need more nutrients than they are getting in the trays?
Good luck and happy allotmenteering!

Just shows what hard work and perseverence can do; thank you for sharing such bountiful inspiration. A virtuous cycle via Charles and his generosity too 🙂
And PouleChick too, good luck with your venture, sounds great!
Best wishes, RuthHi there – just wanted to share a great resource for excellent Klasmann composts, much cheaper than I’ve seen anywhere else, and they don’t require bulk ordering:
They are based in Lincolnshire and have quite a large free delivery area across Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Highly recommend if you’re in range – or have someone you know who is (I had a delivery to my parents’ house and picked it up from there when I next visited from the south).
I found their customer service absolutely wonderful – they could not have been more helpful :0)
Hi Leif, last spring I had a similar strange thing happen in my carrot patch which I had completely netted with micromesh over large hoops and tied off the ends. My neighbour found a magpie in there, and it had caused similar destruction to the plants that you describe without damaging the net structure. How it got in (and why it wanted to?!) is beyond me! They are big strong birds, though. So I wonder if this may be what happened with your parsnips too?
Good luck with recovering your seedlings!
Thanks Charles! I Will!
Sorry – image now resized – for reference to above query.
Thanks!
