You could easily get 12 in your small bed,Iv’e got 48 plants in three double rows that are 15 foot wide (third year so getting really excited)I can’t remember the total area.I’m popping up to the plot tomorrow so I will measure and let you know.
I’m sure you could get twenty in the large bed though.
If you are in the UK have a look at “A grade asparagus” based in Norfolk their crowns are amazing.
Whatever you do DON’T buy the emaciated tiny crowns, that are available at Every garden centre..18th January 2019 at 5:41 pm in reply to: How to grow nice Parsnips and not ugly octopus looking #51650The first picture seems to suggest that your soil is too rich.Stones put an odd curve in here and there but I can’t see how they could be held responsible for said pics..
Thanks Charles yes rust does seem to be on the up,I had to harvest all of my softneck garlic far too early this summer.
I will hold off on the tree cabbage seeds and try to get some kale cuttings in the speing.Hi Sarah that is one impressive greenhouse,I grew Malabar spinach this year in my polytunnel..What a plant, I planted 5 seedlings on a 5 cane wig-wam and away it went. It’s not a true spinach but it does taste similar only a bit fleshier it fed 4 families,I just trained it along the crop bars via twine.
You can get it from Bingenheimer (link provided) The postage is a bit pricey so make sure you order some more of their wonderful seeds..
I can personally recommend.
Florence fennel Perfektion they grew to 750g for me.
Carrots Robila excellent germination and flavour.
Melon Murmel gorgeous flavour.
Kohlrabi Superschmelz the only one I grow now,I grow them in the Autumn (planted late summer) they get pretty
big but never stringy..https://seeds.bingenheimersaatgut.de/info/en/about-us/about-us.html
Iv’e seen many of these, they always seem to be at least a month out.I wouldn’t dare plant squashes/pumpkins,runners etc before the last week in May,I’m N East lincs by the way..
Yes I plan to keep 3 of the bulbs to re-grow,I was just going to buy all from the supermarket next year.
Although when I started to think about it,supermarkets change their suppliers/stock etc quite frequently so hopefully They still stock it next Oct so I can buy six lol.
I urge everybody on here to give them a go.
One month after planting there was about 4 inches of really strong broad leaves whilst there was no signs of the Solent wight, they are really vigorous.Hi Kath I think a small pond is an excellent suggestion, also you could lay a random patio.
Think of a normal flagged patio with flags missing, plant perennials or whatever you like in the gaps.
The gaps are very low maintenance..If if gets that hot!and wipes out all of the nasties, what about all the good fungi and worms etc.It sounds like the atibiotic answer for soil,as in it might be good if you have a serious problem ie life threatening. When you take antibiotics they wipe out all of our good antibodies as well.Just a thought..
Hi Jen seeing that you have a new allotment, the natural assumption is that there is good soil.
Soil is the growing medium for all the vegetables etc you want to grow.I just wonder why you feel the need to go down the lasagne route?Hi Jan Iv’e had the same problem a few years back(two years running 90% went to seed) both with red sets, never with white onion sets.I think if you grow your red onions from seed the results are far better.
I just don’t bother planting any red onions in autumn now.Yes it’s mainly clay and silicate, so technicaly not organic but where do we draw the line with organic?
How was clay/limestone etc formed millions of years ago?
It hasn’t got any nasty chemicals added and we have to remember that most of the deadliest poisons known to man,are 100% organic…Thank you Charles, for you informative reply.I will leave them on and let the plant decide,at the end of the day I wan’t the flavour but not 12lb monsters..
I think something REALLY needs doing about this!
We as gardeners, need protection from what is basically fraud.
These seeds were packed year ending* sow by* but how old are the seeds when packed?
I wont hold my breath on anything been done about it.Big bucks talks in our society and I’m afraid that as more of the independent garden centers and seed companies get swallowed up by big conglomerates..The less of a voice we will have. They will reimburse us of course but they won’t or can’t reimburse us time lost and compost etc..Rant over..20th April 2018 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Is it a good idea to transplant over wintered cabbages from the greenhouse? #46380Mine went in the ground in October, planted at 6 inches apart and we have been harvesting for a couple of weeks now.
They are now spaced 12 inches to heart up.If some are 50cm I would think they are going to seed..Exactly the same problem with Kings Boltardy, multi sown 24 modules – one seedling.
Kings Alderman peas less than 10% germination.
I’m going to E-mail them but definitely won’t be buying from them again… -
